Beef Jerky?
Well I was thinking yesterday about getting some snacks, especially for those times I find myself with no food in the house and don't feel like going to the store at the moment.
Then I looked up snacks and stumbled across beef jerky. It should keep for awhile, at least a year or so if you don't open it right? But if I can buy some for cheaper than store prices that'd be cool. Could also take some with me fishing or shooting. Do you guys have any other food ideas or comments on jerky? Granola bars is another that comes to mind. I want to have some food stored, but I don't know about buying bags of rice and beans. |

Why not make your own? Got an oven?
Slice up a couple of very lean beef roasts, soak the strips in a good marinade for the flavor you want. Place the strips on cookie sheets and dehydrate them at 125F, or as low as the "warm" setting on your oven will allow. Get all the moisture out of the meat, you might want to turn the jerky over after 5 hours or so. If you did it right, it will store well in a plain ziploc bag. Better and cheaper than buying an 8oz bag for $10; you know you didn't add preservatives to it. For Rice, get Organic short grain Brown rice, try Lundberg brand; at your healthfood store. For Beans, any of these (except Pinto beans) will make a complete protein (like meat) when served with rice: Red, Navy, Garbanzo, Black, Soy, Anasazi, Adzuki. Lentils and other peas are very good too. Learn how to make cajun red beans and rice, YUM. Black beans and rice are great also. Nice to have sausage to add for flavoring. Corn bread goes well with beans and rice. Can also recommend storing some yellow corn or corn meal, and wheatberries. Wheatberries make flour when ground. Don't forget a grain mill for making flour. If storing a lot of whole grain, nice to have an electric mill. |
Re: Beef Jerky?
Are you just looking for snacks or are you looking for meal replacements? Jerky isn't too filling, and a lot of the packaged jerky you buy starts tasting off after about 6 months. If you're looking for food you can just leave on the shelf until you need it, most snack foods will last 6 months without getting stale, and many will last a year (check expiration dates).
As Book wrote, the chicken chicken and salmon pouches are great. The canned chicken and tuna aren't bad, either...more filling than jerky. You can toss a few MRE BBQ sauce packs in your storage to mix with your canned chicken. Other things people often use for storage or snack and camping foods: nuts, granola, anything in a can (ravioli, vienna sausages, baked beans, etc.), MREs (if you're looking for long-term storage snack food, try http://www7.mailordercentral.com/longlifefood/home.as ), Raman noodles, Gold Fish crackers, and pretty much any packaged snack food or cookie will last at least 6 months (Pringles, etc.). Many will last a year. |
